A WEE BIO

A little about me.

Scientific theory and experimentation provide me with concepts onto which I apply fictions, in the form of imaginary scientific instruments and data. The work reflects aspects of the human experience that are not (at least not yet) measurable by scientific instrumentation. I ask myself, what if's ...What if we had an instrument that could identify and interpret our memories from a shred of cloth; or map our memories of a coastline now submerged by sea level rise? What if we could compose a quartet from sounds extracted from silent materials such as hair, dust, mud, air. (For more, visit http://www.carriecrane.com/home-page#/instruments-of-measure-1

I am excited by new discoveries in science. For example, the recent understanding that trees (and other plant life) communicate using a mycchorizal network gives me great joy as it opens up possibilities for discovery of other yet unknown relationships among life forms. It re-enforces the notion that there is more going on than we can possibly imagine. It becomes my job as an artist to imagine what that might be as best I can.

I live in a rural area in central Massachusetts, surrounded by fields and trees and a pond. I walk in the woods daily with my dog and subconsciously soak in my surroundings. I think of it mostly as exercise but is serves to calm me. I studied Geography/Cartography for my undergrad degree and mapping shows up in my work fairly often. As I walk, I always have my location mentally mapped from a birds eye perspective and think about natural and man made paths and boundaries and their histories as I walk.
